NIGERIANS ARE HELPLESS!

Published

on

When you are weak, when there is no power, when you are poor, in the time of sorrow, war and when you are not certain of what will happen next; then you are helpless.

By Obiotika Toochukwu

This is the condition of Nigerians after the flawed February 25 Presidential elections in the country. At the moment, everyone looks up to the judiciary which in recent times has become the last hope of political moneybags.

When the mockery; “Go to Court” became over-flogged, Nigerians knew that there is not any hope in the Nigerian courts. If there is any government that downplayed the judiciary and flagrantly disobeyed court orders, it is the present APC-led government of Muhammadu Buhari. This is the reason Nigerians are deeply religious, and they focus more on prayers or what God would miraculously do for them.

They prayed for Nigeria in distress, prayed for an end to bribery and corruption, but the whole circle kept getting out of control. What Nigerians feel for themselves at the moment is odious and repelling. Can the judiciary save Nigeria’s democracy?

Every liable organisation even welfare associations is being run by a written constitution. Nigeria as a nation is being governed by the 1999 Constitution. The application and interpretation of this constitution has become a herculean because a new Nigeria is about to be birthed. The office of the president in any country should be a top job for the most qualified not just in a particular aspect of life, but holistically and generally. Politics in Nigeria, even Africa, has been dirty, deadly and debilitating.

The scenario we have in Nigeria presently amongst the three major parties – PDP, LP and APGA both in their leadership and anti-party activities, leaves much to be desired from the political elites. It is one aspect through which the judiciary has been lampooned.

Sadly, the last concluded election on April 15 in some states in the country portrays vividly that the forces opposing the transformation of Nigeria are many and formidable. The attitude to politics, governance and democracy by the ruling party in Nigeria is worrisome.

Governors from the ruling party exhibit the signs that Nigeria belongs to some people or someone. The electorates in realising this phenomenon tend to lose hope or join the bandwagon. Some governors, especially the oil rich states are doing all they can to make the office of the governor a lifetime investment through signing the bill that will guarantee cars, salary, vacations abroad, and outrageous provisions as soon as they leave office.

All the leaders that Nigeria has produced since 1960 are either Christians or Muslims. These leaders take their oath of office with the Holy Bible or the Quran. This implies that they will serve the nation being mindful of the faith they profess. The underlying doctrine in the holy books urges us to take care of the poor, sick, orphan, widow and elderly.

Now some people (albeit a minority) are poor because they are lazy and need to be motivated to work hard to get their daily bread. But others are poor (a great majority) because of bad governance, government anti-people policies, lack of good health care system, insecurity, death and unfortunate incidences. Three-quarter of the world’s income ends up in the pockets of 20 per cent of its population.

Think of it this way: Some people no matter how they work hard and struggle, will only boast of a daily meal. Does that seem right? Every leader should always have a thought and prayer for the poor among us. Why is it that anyone who becomes a president in Nigeria turns himself into a demigod? Probably, we are following the same constitution. If one is sick, weak or elderly, certain leadership positions especially that of a country should not be his concern. Most African countries are dead not just sick because certain politicians have chosen to die in active service even as octogenarians.

Unfortunately, a lot of great men and thinkers that Nigeria has have shied away from the country due to her woes of leadership crisis. It is the same structure of criminality and corruption that is still keeping the country bound. No level of greatness or height of success is too lofty for any Nigerian to attain. We have infinite possibilities, limitless and unparalleled advantages in the country but leadership has completely spoiled the chances for ordinary Nigerians. We hear mostly of Nigerians in diaspora making waves.

We hear of Nigerian doctors emigrating to UK. We hear of Nigerian youths all wishing to japa. Nigerians are helpless! History will forever be kind to those souls who were fighting even before the civil war for a new Nigeria. Today, the fight is on. And it will surely stand. The boldness we see amongst the old order, the corrupt regime, in their utterances and manner of action is frightening and intimidating. That kind of boldness can only be gotten from kick-backs and filthy lucre.

Prof. Lumumba was quoted for saying; “In Japan, a corrupt person kills himself. In China, they will kill him. In Europe, they jail him. In Africa, he will present himself for election.” And in Nigeria, group of corrupt political elites will make sure he becomes the president (paraphrased). The only power Nigerians look forward to seeing in their president is servant power. A man whose character, competence, capacity and integrity will astound the doubting Thomases. So far what has held sway in the political office of the presidency in Nigeria has been oppressive, authoritarian, dictatorial and despotic.

Finally, Nigerian youths are ready. They are heeding the call to take back their country when tribe, religion nor ethnicity makes no difference to them. The masses as well have a choice on whom will lead them having suffered excruciatingly in the hands of corrupt politicians.

But the corrupt and greedy politicians have another plan for Nigeria. The judiciary as well may not be ready as it is often funded and bribed into submission by the executive. We may not have all the questions answered but a look at them all shows that Nigeria is in mess. Readiness means we are ready to do the smallest or the largest thing – it makes no difference.

It means we are ready to take back our country and whatever it entails, we are there and ready. Whenever duty presents itself, we hear the voice of the supreme call to restore the glory of our country and we are ready for it with a total readiness of our love for her. We can always be creative without being condescending, encouraging without being egotistic, and fearless without being foolish.

[CORRUPTION] EFCC VS AKPABIO AND THE IMPUNITY OF NIGERIA’S POWER ELITE

Published

on

Senator Godswill Akpabio

Senator Godswill Akpabio is presently embroiled in what could be considered the most decisive political struggle of his career amidst heavy baggage of corruption allegations hanging over his neck.

Most of those who circulate around the Nigerian corridors of power apart from belonging to the same elite club that ruined the country also have one other thing in common: proclivity to insatiable thirst for acquisition at the expense of the people.

And the more they are politically exposed, the more the stories are told of alleged corrupt practices involving benumbing amounts of public funds brazingly looted. And the more they acquire, the more they want more; in position, in power, its perks, and for sure everything they could take away, illegally that is.

Senator Godswill Akpabio was a Commissioner in Akwa Ibom state. He later was picked by Governor Victor Attah to succeed him where he was considered by many to have performed well. From there he went to the Senate and later became a minister for Nigeria Delta. He is now again elected as a senator and is seriously vying to become the Senate President.

That is quite some resume. However, in all these offices, Akpabio oversaw huge budgets which a typical Nigerian politician will not just ignore hence it is being alleged that he tampered with some billions for which the anti graft agency, the EFCC has been inviting him to come and answer some questions about.

But like is common with the power elite, he has been dodging under one pretext or the other, including offering ridiculous excuses. At the same time, he is seriously vying for the position of the Senate President, lobbying with everything at his disposal.

However, in all he puts forward in his bid, he acts like it is important to go clear his name, especially as the amount being mentioned is in the tens of billions, and that his integrity is seriously at stake. The office of the Senate President, the third highest and most powerful in the country, ordinarily demands the highest level of character from any who aspires to occupy it.

But as he plays hide and seek with the EFCC, the chairman of the commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa recently was at the presidency in an audience with President Tinubu. It was said that Akpabio’s case was one of what he briefed the president on. And according to reports, the president was not at all amused by what he heard.

How that will impact his chances will manifest fully in the coming days as the proposed leadership of the tenth senate takes shape. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu also was seriously in the race. He was earlier imprisoned for corruption, after being found guilty by the court for diverting billions of Abia state government funds. Although he was later released by a court order on technical grounds, that he could shrug it off just like that, speaks volumes. He had notably made lots of deprecating remarks against his Igbo tribe in what many saw as attempt to ingratiate some power blocs, to woo them into endorsing and supporting his ambition.

As it seems, it is like he was never on anyone’s agenda. And, that these two, in all the weighty corruption allegations hanging on them, could boldly come out to seek this office, clearly show the level of contempt the Nigerian political elite have for the people. This is what clearly drives their impunity to loot public funds and still feel so much entitled.

SPY RECRUITMENT: THE CIA IS LOOKING FOR RUSSIANS WITH AN AX TO GRIND

Published

on

Happy people don’t spy; angry people do. Last week, the CIA launched an initiative to find them. Specifically, the United States spy agency set out to find disgruntled citizens of Russia with access to sensitive information they could share with the US.

By Douglas London

The CIA has created a new channel on the Telegram social media app, popular with Russians, on which it posted a video appealing to Russians with access to sensitive information to contact the agency, and provided instructions on how to do so securely. The two-minute, Russian-language production has also appeared on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

The outreach aims to appeal to Russian sentiments and culture and takes advantage of the current dire internal political and economic challenges in the country. The narrator tells viewers that, “People around you may not want to hear the truth, but we do. You are not powerless,” the narrator says. “Connect with us in a safe way.”

This direct appeal is an unusual approach, but one which could prove effective in reaching a Russian populace with few options to express their discontent. Russians angry with the Kremlin’s state-sanctioned corruption and abuse, with no way to act openly, are left with few alternatives other than finding external support.

In the past, Russians who have spied for the CIA have largely done so over ideological differences with the government and out of patriotic devotion to a Russian or Soviet state they feared was being badly mismanaged – not, for the most part, for mercenary reasons. These “agents,” as they are known in the CIA, often have greater loyalty to Russia than to what they viewed as the illegitimate governments they were ruled by.

Some needed to channel their disillusionment or guilt at being part of the corrupt system. But many more were pushed to spy against their government – despite the risks – for more personal reasons, acting out of anger against the Kremlin for failings or actions that impacted them or their families.

There are any number of Russians with access to sensitive intelligence who are angry at the repression and kleptocracy that has flourished under President Vladimir Putin, and who are concerned about the future. But the decision to spy requires a trigger, or “precipitating crisis,” as veteran CIA psychologist Ursula Wilder writes. Potential spies also need the opportunity. Putin provided the crisis, the CIA is offering the opportunity, and today’s technology is providing the means.

The CIA video avoids criticizing Russia or Putin and makes no mention of Ukraine –- at least, not directly. It provides potential Russian agents affirmation, empowerment and hope. Rather than idly standing by while their country falls to ruin, the CIA tries to convince these Russians that partnering with the agency provides a way that they take back some degree of control.

I’m quite deliberate about the word “partnering,” since espionage is truly a joint effort rather than an employee relationship or one of indentured servitude. Affirmation, empowerment and hope are powerful motivators for many who come into the agency’s service. Money is rarely the key factor for Russian agents, with notable exceptions. Financial compensation is often a tool to achieve a goal rather than an end – a way to pay medical bills, the kids’ tuition, or purchase necessities for one’s family.

Russian agents have historically required relatively little cultivation or manipulation beyond assurances that they would be handled securely, and their secrets used appropriately. Some had long considered the prospect, their inclination ultimately awakened by circumstances and opportunity.

Once moved by whatever crisis that compelled them to act, Russian spies often seek to validate their handlers’ discretion and professionalism before pulling the trigger. The CIA video seeks to bridge that final obstacle, appealing to prospective agents much as an empathetic and non-judgmental friend might. (Incidentally, the FBI posted its own video appeal to Russians on Twitter in April, aimed more narrowly at diplomats and Russian personnel based in Washington, DC.)

Moscow has made it clear that it is aware of US efforts to recruit its nationals for espionage – and is determined to thwart them. “I am convinced that our special services are properly monitoring this space,” said Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Putin. The Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry called it “a very convenient resource for tracking applicants.”

Perhaps, but the CIA has taken precautions against its recruits being detected. The agency’s video showed images of individuals using their own mobile phones, but also tutored viewers in the mechanics of using the TOR app, otherwise known as “the onion browser.” TOR, which can be configured for use even in countries that seek to block it, allows a user to surf the dark web in a way that cannot be traced back to them. Once contact is made, the CIA provides additional secure means of communications.

In November 2022, CIA Deputy Director of Operations David Marlowe said that the agency is “open for business” for Russians who are “disgusted” by the war in Ukraine. I expected that would be the case, as I wrote in a March 2022 opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal, but less because of broad Russian sympathy for Ukraine as much as the war’s economic and political consequences at home. Meanwhile, CNN reported that since the start of the Ukraine invasion, CIA contact with Russian officials offering to cooperate “was encouraging enough to launch this latest effort.”

The CIA’s messaging and instructions suggests its goal is likely intended to expand the potential agent pool beyond Russian intelligence officers, probably aiming to Russians in the military, scientific, economic, policy and technical fields, among others. Russian intelligence officers have the savvy and training to make clandestine approaches to the CIA that prospective agents from other parts of society lack.

What does all this do for the US, besides possibly embarrassing Putin, who is immune to shame and already perpetually angry with the West? It could yield important new troves of information and the intelligence gleaned might not just inform Washington’s decision-making, it could help expose Russian lies, illuminate truth and remind Putin of the fragility of his grip.

To fight Russian disinformation and inhibit Moscow’s would-be allies, the Biden administration weaponized intelligence. This was reflected by its unprecedented declassification of highly sensitive information which arguably was effective in galvanizing international support for Ukraine at the outset of the war, undermining Russian false flagscenarios, exposing Iran’s lethal support to Moscow and discouraging China from providing Putin with weapons.

In the shadowy world of espionage, the CIA’s open advertising might seem counterintuitive. But the intelligence business relies on a steady stream of new sources. Human Intelligence is about people and relationships. The CIA can only thrive by adapting to the times and the people it seeks to engage. History shows that one well-placed spy can very well lead to outcomes that change the world.

MOHAMED ALI ON SONY LISTON

Published

on

He said:

“He knows I’m great. He went to school, he’s no fool. I predict that he will go in eight to prove that I’m great, and if he wants to go to heaven, I’ll get him in seven. He’ll be in a worser fix if I cut it to six.

“And if he keeps talking jive, I’ll cut it to five. And if he makes me sore, he’ll go like Archie Moore, in four. And if that don’t do, I’ll cut it to two. And if he run, he’ll go in one. And if he don’t want to fight, he should keep himself home that night. Just before the fight, when the referee was giving us instructions, Liston was giving me that stare.

“And I won’t lie, I was scared. Sonny Liston was one of the greatest fighters of all time. He was one of the most scientific boxers who ever lived, he hit hard, and he was fixing to kill me. It frightened me, just knowing how hard he hit.

“But I was there, I didn’t have no choice but to go out and fight. The first round, I was dancing, moving back and side-to-side. I hit him with a couple of combinations, and he got me once with a right hand to the stomach.

“At the end of the round, I went back to my corner, and I felt good because I knew I could survive. Round two, I made a mistake and he caught me against the ropes. I got away from most of the punches, but he hit me good with a left hook that shook me up. Round three, I changed my strategy.

“I’d planned to fight hard the first two rounds, and then coast while Liston got tired. That way, by round five or six, I’d be rested and he’d be out of energy, and I’d start coming on strong. But at the start of round three, I could see he was frustrated and getting tired already, so I decided to test him then.”
