SIT-AT-HOME GROUNDS Enugu Again.

Published

on

This is the ever-busy WAEC roundabout, completely deserted.

The weekly Sit-At-Home once again today emptied the major streets of Enugu of human and vehicular traffic.

When WORDS AND SHOTS went round some major parts of the metropolis, everywhere looked deserted. However, very few commercial buses and tricycles were seen discreetly operating.

WAEC BUS STOP by OKPARA SQUARE. This area also used to be busy with human and vehicular traffic as it is a major bus stop and traffic hub for the civil servants working around the area that hosts ENSUBEB, The Judiciary, The House of Assembly, Ministry of Transport, among others. PHOTO: BONA NGWU.

One of the commercial drivers who spoke to our correspondent under anonymity, said he was taking a huge risk to be in the street as anything could happen and no one would be held responsible.

He said “the streets are very dangerous. Even though the IPOB had repeatedly said they have called it off, some bad people were still going around, attacking people and creating more fear. So, who are these they?”

A tricycle operator who simply gave his name as Obinna, said he was out to partially see if he could make some brisk business and also observe what the situation was like. He said while the people had every reason to be angry, it was going to be counter productive to be observing the sit at home every week, instead of about once a month or so.

When reminded the IPOB had long cancelled it, he suggested some idle hoodlums might have been taking advantage of the initial order to see if they could create a breakdown of law and order, that bad people have hijacked it like the EndSars protest.

He noted that while it was safer to stay at home in order not to fell a random victim of those who could want to attack people, some really needed to work every day to be able to eat.

WORDS AND SHOTS noticed however that as the day wore on, more people began to come out, though largely within their immediate neighbourhoods, to walk around and also buy things from shops operating mostly at inner streets.

Below are some major roads and streets WORDS AND SHOTS visited:
