SENATE CONFIRMS ARIWOOLA’S APPOINTMENT AS CJN

Published

•CJN says no crisis among Supreme Court Justices despite leaked memo

•Bemoans poor funding of Judiciary

The acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola was screened and confirmed by the Senate as the substantive head of the Judiciary arm of the Nigerian government yesterday.

The screening lasted one hour during which senators across political party lines, asked questions bordering on the plans of Ariwoola to turn the Judiciary arms of government around during his tenure.

Obviously satisfied with the performance of the CJN during the questions and answers session, the senators unanimously approved his appointment after the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, put the approval to voice vote.

Ariwoola’s, confirmation came, close to three months after his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The acting CJN was appointed on June 27, 2022, and he had three months to get the Senate confirmation, failure which he would have required fresh nomination.

The newly confirmed CJN told Senators during the screening that there was no crisis among Justices of the Supreme Court, contrary to the insinuations contained in a leaked memo to the immediate past CJN, Mohammed Tanko.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo – Agege; Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and a few other lawmakers had in their remarks before asking questions, expressed worry over the embarrassment caused by the alleged petitions written to Justice Tanko by 15 other Justices of the Supreme Court in June this year.

However, Ariwoola in response to the lawmakers’ remarks said Supreme Court Justices didn’t write petition to or against Justice Mohammed, the then CJN.

He clarified that it was an internal memo on how to address challenges being faced by them as regards welfare and unconducive working environment.

He said, “Distinguished Senator Ovie Omo-Agege started from what he decided not to call a petition even though many newspapers and the press that accosted me on the day I was sworn-in as acting said Justices of the Supreme Court wrote petition.

“We did not write petition. It was an internal memo not of the court but of Justices. There were about 15 Justices of the court then with the Chief Justice and we had either individually as friends, colleagues or in group at meetings raised certain issues that were touching on persons, working conditions of Justices such as some of us not having accommodation at all particularly amongst my brothers who were appointed in 2020.

“Some have still not gotten accommodation and ask me where do they live? Some live very far and stay quite far to the court. Some vehicles had not been provided.

“Our entitlements as Justices of Supreme Court to attend workshops were claimed not to be provided for whereas in the budget there were these provisions.

“When we realised that each time we had a meeting and we took this up, our brother the Honourable the Chief Justice then would probably forget or didn’t remember to take care of it. Sometimes, the management of court would still tell the Chief Justice there was no money.”

Speaking further, the CJN said: “So, we sat together and put something in paper. No Secretary typed this. One of us who was Secretary to a committee which was then the welfare committee of the court typed it and we all, the 14 of us, sat and signed.

“After we signed this memo, we took it up to deliver it personally to our brother the Chief Justice. We did not allow anybody to see this memo.

“How it came in the pages of newspapers is still a miracle to us. We never made it available to anyone. In fact, no Justices had copy of this memo. We just read it to ourselves and we agreed and we signed and took it to him.

“So, how it got in to the newspapers, if you like got leaked to the press we were embarrassed ourselves and we all met with the Chief Justice again to say what happened.

“We wanted His Lordship to get the management of the court to meet with us do that we can let them know we had no problems with our Number One. We agreed.

“The (former) Chief Justice gave us a time and we all gathered again, only to realise that there was no plan to bring any member of management. The Chief Justice himself was surprised that we were around again.”

According to the CJN, his predecessor probably forgot that he said so.

“He apologised that he forgot to invite them and we left. So, there was no petition either to or against the Chief Justice. We remained brothers and we were acting as one even though we all had our complaints like the distinguished senator said.

“When there was a circular that moved round that the generator would be switched off at 4 O’clock when sometimes we will be sitting in court till 6pm and I had had to climb up the staircase when I arrive the court before 8am because the circular said the generator would not be switched on until 8am.

“So any Justice that came before 8am must either have to stay downstairs if he could not climb or climb the stairs to the third floor. We felt that was embarrassed enough.

“We told our brother the Chief Justice that nothing was done to it and he said he didn’t know that that was what was happening. That was exactly what happened. It was not a petition. Justices were not protesting.

“It was not a protest that we should have carried placards. It was not a protest. We thought to put our complaints on paper for our brother the Chief Justice that was all.”

He, however, said most of the issues raised in the memo were still not being attended due to paucity of fund and poor funding of the Supreme Court in particular and Judiciary generally.

On the delay in justice administration, Ariwoola said as justice delayed was seen as justice denied, so also justice rushed means justice denied.

According to him, the wheel of Justice may be slow but as long as it is steady, justice would always be served on those who deserved it.

He added that appointment of judicial officers was different from dancing ‘palango ‘ as it takes a lawyer to be at the bar for a minimum of 10 years before securing appointment as Judge of State or Federal High Court and minimum of 15 years for such appointment at the Court of Appeal.

As to his vision, Ariwoola said having gone through all reports, the judiciary cannot achieve success alone.

He said, “This is my 11th in the Supreme Court I know that the judiciary even though said to be the third arm of government cannot work alone as an independent arm of Government.

“The Supreme Court or the Judiciary if you like needs the other two arms of Government mostly, particularly this honourable Senate in that the Judiciary of Nigeria is suffering from lack of funds.

“We are trying to introduce technology which has gone far in other climes. Technology is so germane and it is so important that it is so important that it is my desire to introduce key filling and electronic service of processes.”

PETER OBI RAISES ALARM OVER ARREST OF ‘OBIDIENTS’ BY SECURITY AGENTS

Published

on

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi has claimed that security agents are ‘silently arresting’ his Obidients supporters.

Obi made this allegation in a series of tweets via his verified Twitter handle on Tuesday.

His words, “Recent reports of OBIdients being silently arrested by some security agents is extremely disturbing and condemnable. We must ensure that everyone is given a level playing field in the forthcoming elections, and that no eligible Nigerian, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or political affiliation is disenfranchised, more so through violence and intimidation.

“Elections are not deemed free and fair when a certain group employs the tool of intimidation to ensure that the opposition is silenced, both at the campaigns and at the polls.

“Peaceful assembly and unfettered electioneering campaigns are constitutionally guaranteed. Both and other ordered liberties cannot be breached wilfully by security agents,” he said.

Obi, however, called on the Federal and State agencies to remind their operatives on the need to respect civil liberties.

Recall that supporters of Obi had also raised the alarm over alleged intimidation by the officials of security agencies at the Lagos4ObiDatti during the weekend (Saturday).

A member of Peter Obi Central Coordinators, F S Yusuf, whow made the claim in a tweet via his Twitter handle, stated that Peter Obi’s supporters are being harassed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport 1.

His tweet reads, “Reports reaching me Joseph Onuorah @BigJoeOfLagos an #Obidient and a part of the Lagos ObiDatti Rally is being held by the DSS/Immigration at the MMA1 upon his arrival from France. He was flagged on the “Stop List”. We call on the authorities to respect his rights……”

A coalition of support groups, Lagos4ObiDatti, backing Peter Obi in 2023, had earlier announced plans to hold its Lagos 4-million-man march for ObiDatti.

Addressing newsmen in Lagos, the Lagos4ObiDatti Central Organizing Committee said the march will take place across three major locations on October 1, 2022.

The group, however, denounced any attempt to link the Lagos Obidient Rally to the 2020 #EndSars Movement.

Speaking on the Lagos4ObiDatti rally, chairman of the Publicity and Media Committee, Christopher Ademuyiwa, had stated that the march would hold simultaneously in three different locations in the Lagos metropolis, namely Admiralty gate Lekki Phase 1; Archbishop Vining Memorial Church, GRA, Ikeja; and at FHA field on 23 road Festac.

Ademuyiwa said: “This march is more like a carnival, and the Obidients in Lagos are gearing up in large numbers to show their support for the Peter Obi and Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed presidential ticket.

“Also, plans have been made to have buses transport Obidients to and from their locations, and the bus pickup points will be released on social media.

“Our march is legal and constitutional, it is within the electoral time frame and calendar released by INEC and all security agencies have been duly and formally informed using the appropriate means.

“The police, NSCDC, road safety and DSS will be on ground to provide security as we march,” Ademuyiwa had said.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi Grassroots Mobilization group had, ahead of the rally, stated that, as advised by our legal team, all the support groups for Peter Obi will comply with the Court Order and directives contained therein as it relates to Lekki Toll Gate.

“We will not deviate from the planned routes as judiciously Ordered. We urge every OBIDIENTS to comply,” the group stated in a post via its Twitter handle on Saturday.

BUHARI’S INDEPENDENCE BROADCAST EMBARRASSING, SAY NIGERIANS

Published

on

Nigeria Coat of Arm

Nigerians, from different quarters, have described President Muhammadu Buhari’s national broadcast on the occasion of the 62nd independence anniversary, as a national embarrassment.

It could be recalled that during this year’s independence national broadcast, Buhari was quoted as saying: “The annals of Nigerian’s history was no longer a household secret as I failed and later succeeded in my attempts to become the country’s president.

“I am honoured to say my election as a democratic president in 2015 was made positive by the majority of Nigerians.

“When you elected me, I acknowledged that the tasks before me were daunting, but surmountable, because of growing national consensus that our chosen path to national development was democracy.”

Many Nigerians have, therefore, ciriticised the president as the democracy he referred to in his speech has been bastardised by the present All Progressives Congress (APC) led government by failing to meet the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.

Commenting on reactions to Buhari’s independence broadcast, a Dutse, Jigawa State-based social critic, Mahmud Tahir, said that the blame for the socio-political and economic woes of the country should not be borne by the president alone.

He added that his cabals, the state governors, and members of the National Assembly, among others, must share in the leadership failure of the country.

FG WARNS AGAINST FAKE NIGERIA AIR RECRUITMENT WEBSITE

Published

on

The Management of Nigeria Air Limited on Tuesday described the website and links used for recruitment advertisements and announcements by unscrupulous members of the public claiming to be agents or staff of Nigeria Air as ‘fake.’

In a statement, the Special Assistant (Public Affairs) to the Minister of Aviation, James Odaudu, advised Nigerians to disregard such notifications or invitations as nothing of such exercise is currently ongoing.

He, however, advised those who applied for the earlier officially advertised positions to get authenticated information from the official website: www.nigeriaair.world.

The statement read,” The attention of the Management of Nigeria Air Limited has been drawn to some recruitment advertisements and announcements by certain unscrupulous elements claiming to be agents or staff of the upcoming airline.

“The so-called agents have created a host of fake websites and links supposedly for the submission of applications by unsuspecting members of the public.

“We wish to inform the general public, especially those who have applied for the earlier officially advertised positions, that no recruitment interviews or tests have been scheduled. All such announcements or invitations for such should be disregarded as they are the handiwork of fraudsters and scammers.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the official website is www.nigeriaair.world, and only those pre-qualified as meeting the B737 requirements will be contacted by the management of Nigeria Air Limited individually, and certainly not by public announcements.

“All those concerned are therefore advised to ignore such announcements or invitations, as responding to, or dealing with them in any way, will be at their own risk.

“Management appreciates the unprecedented level of interest shown by Nigerians in the airline which has resulted in the receipt of over 20,000 applications for positions in the organisation so far and wishes to state that the recruitment process for other positions will begin in due course.”
