BVAS: INEC SHIFTS GUBER, ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS TO MARCH 18

Published

on

Due to its inability to commence the reconfiguration of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAS, machines on time, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has postponed the governorship and state assembly elections fixed for March 11 to March 18.

The Court of Appeal, yesterday, gave the commission the nod to reconfigure the BVAS used for the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly polls in readiness for the state elections.

Confirming the postponement, the Head of Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Civil Society Organisation of INEC in Ondo State, Funke Segun-Osifeso said: “This is to inform you that the House of Assembly election has been officially postponed till Saturday 18/02/2023.

“Therefore, the distribution exercise slated for tomorrow has been cancelled. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.”

The INEC hierarchy, Vanguard gathered was still meeting over the matter last night and was yet to clear the issue at press time.

Another source in INEC told Vanguard that another reason the election may be postponed is insecurity.

It was gathered that following the violence that characterized the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections, some Adhoc staff are afraid of coming out to conduct the March 11 elections.

The source said: “Some of the Adhoc staff are afraid to come out to conduct the elections because of what happened during the Presidential election.”

Vanguard had on Monday exclusively reported that the elections could be postponed, except the appellate court reversed itself on relief it granted the Presidential Candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party, LP counterpart, Peter Obi.

Both the INEC National Commissioner in charge of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye and the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi were not immediately available for comments.

Confusion over postponement

Indeed, there was confusion within the nation’s political circles on Wednesday night, following speculations that the INEC might have postponed governorship and state assembly elections.

Vanguard had on Monday exclusively reported that the elections could be postponed, except the appellate court reversed itself on relief it granted the Presidential Candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party LP counterpart, Peter Obi.

However, a source said the election is most likely to be postponed because the reconfiguration of the BVAS machines may not be concluded before Tuesday.

The court had last week stopped the INEC from tampering with the BVAS deployed in last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Obi in his application moved by his team of lawyers, led by Mr Alex Ejesieme, SAN, sought six principal reliefs, while Atiku’s lawyer, Adedamola Faloku, sought seven prayers from the tribunal.

Among the reliefs sought by the plaintiffs were; “An order granting the applicants’ permission to do electronic scanning and make photocopies of voter’s registration, ballot papers used in the conduct of the election for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria held on the 25th day of February 2023.

“An order granting leave to the applicants to carry out Digital Forensic Inspection of BVAS machines used for the conduct of the 25th February 2023 election for the Office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The plaintiffs also sought an order restraining “the First Respondent from tampering with the information embedded in the BVAS machines until the due inspection was conducted and Certified True Copies of them issued”.

The court granted the reliefs and with regards to the BVAS, said; “That leave is hereby granted to the applicants to carry out Digital Forensic Inspection of BVAS machines used for the conduct of the 25th February 2023 Election for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

ELECTIONS THREATENED

However, INEC is expected to deploy the same BVAS for the sub-national elections, meaning that the commission will have to reconfigure them and make them fit for purpose.

Vanguard checks revealed that it takes an average of five days to configure the BVAS, meaning that the commission has to begin the process of reconfiguration latest by Tuesday.

WE’LL RECIPROCATE WIKE’S CONTRIBUTION TO TINUBU’S VICTORY — APC

Published

on

Some members of the Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, of the All Progressives Congress APC, have attributed the victory of APC’s candidate, Bola Tinubu, in Rivers State to the intervention of Governor Nyesom Wike.

The members of the PCC also said they would support Wike’s preferred candidate, Siminialaye Fubara, as a way of reciprocating the governor’s support during the presidential polls.

The PCC which, yesterday in Port Harcourt, said Wike was instrumental to the success of the APC at the presidential polls, said without the efforts of the governor that their candidate would not have secured up to the 25% vote which is the constitutional requirement expected from the state.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the APC for the campaign in the state and a member of the party’s PCC and Independent Campaign Council, ICC, in the state, Tony Okocha, commended the governor for the support that has given the party victory in the state.

Okocha noted that months before the APC presidential primaries, the team inaugurated structures across the state and canvassed for support for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu despite opposition from the leader of the APC in Rivers state.

He claimed that following the bid they were denied access to party revalidation, adding that they were unlawfully excluded from the electioneering processes with impunity without recourse to the spirit and letters of the electoral act.

The APC chieftain alleged that members of the PCC had intended to sabotage the election if not for their dedication.

Okocha noted that in 2015 and 2019 that the APC could not win any election in the state and could not also get 25% of votes for their presidential candidate

He said: “We note seriously and unashamedly that in 2015 we held the rims of governance in Rivers state as members of the APC.

“We pulled together all efforts individually and collectively, yet we couldn’t secure 25% of the total votes cast for the presidential candidate of our party during the presidential election.

“It was worse in 2019 when we all still working together with a Super Minister, security apparatchik and malleable election personnel, we couldn’t produce the required 25% for our presidential candidate.

“But in 2023, against all expectations, APC Rivers won and secured over 40% of the total votes cast for the presidential candidate of our party.”

“Of tremendous note, is to put on records, the role of Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, a leading member of the G5 Governors (Integrity Group) who not only threw his heavy weight in political maestro and “mannerism “ in support of the APC candidate, but encouraged Rivers people to vote the man who will protect the Rivers interest for the President of Nigeria.

WHY DO BANANAS TURN BROWN?

Published

on

Green, yellow and black bananas © cegli/Fotolia

The life cycle of a banana is a colorful one—it starts with a deep green, changes to a delicious yellow, and ends (if it’s not eaten beforehand) at an unappetizing brown. But what causes this color change, and what makes a banana go from green all the way to the dark side? As it turns out, bananas are a little too gaseous for their own good.

Bananas, like most fruits, produce and react with an airborne hormone called ethylene that helps to signal the ripening process. A fruit that is unripened is hard, is more acidic than it is sugary, and likely has a greenish hue due to the presence of chlorophyll, a molecule found in plants that is important in photosynthesis. When a fruit comes into contact with ethylene gas, the acids in the fruit start to break down, it becomes softer, and the green chlorophyll pigments are broken up and replaced—in the case of bananas, with a yellow hue. The loss of the acidic taste and hardened interior means a sweeter, yummier, and mushier fruit—perfect for eating!

However, unlike most fruits, which generate only a tiny amount of ethylene as they ripen, bananas produce a large amount. While a banana in the beginning of the ripening process might become sweeter and turn yellow, it will eventually overripen by producing too much of its own ethylene. High amounts of ethylene cause the yellow pigments in bananas to decay into those characteristic brown spots in a process called enzymatic browning. This natural browning process is also observed when fruits become bruised. A damaged or bruised banana will produce an even higher amount of ethylene, ripening (and browning) faster than if undamaged. It seems like your grandma was right—a green banana that’s placed in a brown paper bag will ripen faster because of all the ethylene trapped inside. But if the fruit is subjected to its own gaseous prison for too long, it will ripen itself all the way to rot.
